  The new Museion

Project: KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike, Berlin

The museum’s new seat has been conceived as an architectural complex that presents and communicates a clear and significant image within a heterogeneous urban context. The cubic structure is itself a creative reaction to the spaces and conditions which are part of the nature of the site: a passage from the densely populated old city to the meadows along the Talfer river, with their panoramic view of the landscape.
The new construction consists of an elongated cube of which the lengthier sides are covered by an unbroken metal surface. In contrast, the end walls offer a view of the building’s interior: they present themselves as major routes of communication between the city and the meadows that flank the river, and they communicate a sense of transparency and openness. The entire glass facade functions as a kind of screen that projects or discloses the whole range of the museum’s interior activities, and with exhibitions or manifestations taking place on the building’s ground floor, access will be possible from both sides, allowing the building in fact to be traversed. The main route of public entrance to the foyer will be through the square that stands before the building on via Dante, facing off towards the center of the old town. The activity area in the building’s lower level can likewise be reached directly from the square in front of the building, by way of an ample staircase. The position of the stairs and elevators allows independent access to the exhibition area, the coffee shop, the museum store, the library, and the project room (for children and youngsters). The main interior staircase links all the building’s various levels, spatially connecting its different areas, such as the exhibition spaces, the library, the activity and information areas.
The new museum combines the characteristics of a classic gallery with the openness and flexibility of a laboratory. The atelier and project rooms for artists are housed in a building of their own at the northern end of the site. The museum garden, which will serve as exhibition and activity space for both of these buildings, is in fact situated between the museum and the ateliers.
