The library
The Museion library is open to the public and is specialized in modern and contemporary art. Its constantly growing collection of documentary materials comes both from Italy and abroad, with particular attention to the German-speaking countries. In addition to offering background materials on the museum’s exhibitions and the work of the artists in the museum’s collection, another primary function of the Museion library is to stimulate the public’s interest and knowledge with respect to art in general. The library encourages the widest possible circulation of its resources.

Holdings The library’s holdings are in constant growth, and currently amount to some twenty thousand volumes. The library subscribes to about twenty specialized magazines and houses more than two hundred video tapes. The library’s further development is assured by purchases—financed by contributions from the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol—as well as by exchanges of publications with important museums and cultural institutions both in Italy and abroad. Donations are also received from private individuals, collectors, artists and galleries. The collection is clearly organized, according to a system of categories, roughly as follows: art encyclopedias and works for general consultation; the history and theory of art; monographs and catalogues raisonnés on the work of artists, architects, and photographers; movements and styles from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day; private and museum collections; show catalogues; art and language (conceptual art, visual poetry, concrete poetry); museum administration and architecture; museum didactics; applied and related arts; periodicals; the video collection.
Services Consultation: the library's holdings are housed on open shelves, thus assuring free access to all readers. OPAC: the catalogue of the Museion library can also be consulted remotely. Holdings are catalogued according to the ISBD system (International Standard of Bibliographical Description). Loans: with the exception of general reference works, books can be borrowed for a period of thirty days, and loans can be extended not only in person but also by phone or e-mail. Loans of videocassettes and magazines, with the exclusion of the current issue of periodicals, are for a period of two weeks. It is also possible to reserve publications which are currently unavailable, and photostatic copies can be made. Interlibrary loans, however, cannot be effected. Reference service: in addition to assistance regarding the library’s holdings, and as well with techniques for on-line consultation of the library’s catalogue, readers may also request bibliographies and other specific research tools by way of the library’s internet resources. Internet: a PC workstation is available to readers free of charge, for the consultation of web sites which relate to the areas of the library’s functions.
